This is a small plastic rod about the size of a matchstick containing a slow release progestogen system. This method of contraception is over 99% effective against pregnancy. A small flexible rod (about the size of a matchstick) is inserted in your upper arm by a specially trained nurse or doctor. It works by releasing a hormone called progestogen which stops ovulation, thickens the cervical mucus (at neck of womb) to prevent sperm reaching an egg and thins the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilised egg implanting. This method works for three years but can be taken out sooner should you wish. The Wolverton Centre has a dedicated clinic for this method please telephone 020 8974-9331 should you wish to book an appointment.
