This is a plastic IUD with a local hormone releasing system. It is 99% effective against pregnancy. It is inserted into the womb by a specially trained nurse or doctor. It works by releasing a hormone called progestogen which thickens the cervical mucus to prevent sperm reaching an egg, thins the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilised egg implanting and in some women also prevents ovulation. This method works for five years but can be taken out sooner should you wish. The Wolverton Centre has a dedicated clinic for this method; please telephone 020 8974-9331 should you wish to book an appointment.
