Copper intrauterine device (IUD)

Copper intrauterine device

This is a plastic IUD with copperbands on the arms. It is over 99% effective against pregnancy.  It is inserted into the womb by a specially trained nurse or doctor. It works by preventing the sperm swimming and functioning properly so they cannot reach an egg.  It may also stop a fertilised egg implanting in the uterus. This method works for five to ten years depending on the type of IUD, but can be taken out sooner should you wish. The Wolverton Centre has a dedicated clinic for this method; please use the e-booking form should you wish to book an appointment.
